How can I set up BT fibre ?
Self-installation is possible with BT Fibre hubs.
The full fibre service can be activated and switched on remotely for some customers. If BT have contacted you to tell you that this is the case, you can get all the equipment ready to go before your activation date. Follow the steps below:
- Make sure your Openreach modem is connected to the mains and all the lights are lighting up on it. If you are a Full Fibre customer and don't have an Openreach modem you'll need to book an engineer appointment to get one installed via My BT.
- Plug the Ethernet cable (red end) into the Port/LAN1 socket of the Openreach modem and connect it to port marked 'WAN' on the back of your BT Hub. This will be yellow or red depending on the type of Smart Hub you have.
- On activation date, BT will email or text you once your Full Fibre is switched on - this might not be until later in the day.
Customers choose the Fibre Essential, Fibre 1 or Fibre 2 package won't have an Openreach modem and will need to have an engineer installation appointment.
What is BT's service like ?
BT provides a reliable service with a wide range of speeds that are able to handle smaller households all the way up to the most busy family lives. The Smart Hub is a sturdy and efficient router that is easy to install and only takes a couple of minutes to step up.
The downside of BT Fibre is that you are paying a little more for the service than the comparable packages of its competitors. It is not as fast as Virgin media, and its customer feedback and reviews are mixed at best depending on the package you choose and where you are in the UK.
BT scores 1.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot and a 3.1 out of 5 on Broadband UK. Expert Reviews most recent review of BT Broadband in January 2021 rates the service a 4 star overall.
All in all, as one of the UK's largest providers, BT stands up as a good, reliable option for those looking for fast fibre broadband for their homes. Make sure you compare the deal you are interested in with BT's network competitors.
